Welcome This summer will mark the 33nd National Cello Institute. Over the years, this has proven to be a truly unique experience for cello students of all ages and levels. Because enrollment at the NCI is almost exclusively cello students, we have the unique situation of having the most comprehensive program at the same time as having one of the smallest overall enrollments of any institute in the country. Over 150 cello students regularly attend the NCI. The students generally range in age from 5 to 18 and in level from French Folk Song to the major solo repertoire. We also usually have a class of enthusiastic adult students. This means that no matter what your age or level is, there are going to be classes at the NCI that will suit you perfectly. Plan to attend the National Cello Institute this year. It will be an experience you will enjoy and remember forever! Curriculum Cello Courses Cello students of all ages and levels are accepted at the NCI. All levels of the cello repertoire from the beginning through the Major Concertos will be taught. Students will be placed in courses according to the level of their current repertoire. The sequence of repertoire in the Suzuki Cello School will be used to place students. The following Courses will be offered. Each Course will include these classes which are held daily through the week: Warm-up class is a large group class with an emphasis on fundamental technique. Lesson class is a small group where each student gets daily individual instruction. Ensemble class has a music reading emphasis. (Note: Beginners do not have an Ensemble class). Beginner's Course This Course is reserved for students under the age of 8 who are studying in Suzuki Book 1 who do not yet read music. Beginners have a Warm-up class and a Lesson class (no Ensemble class). Beginners will be finished with their classes before noon. Cello Course Books 1-4 Students of any age are accepted into this Course. They are scheduled in Warm-up class, Lesson class (maximum of four students per hour) and Ensemble class. Cello Course Books 5 and up Students of any age are accepted into this Course. They are scheduled in Warm-up class, Lesson class (maximum of three students per hour) and Ensemble class. In addition they will be assigned a spot in the Cello Orchestra. Advanced Technique This is an optional class for students playing advanced repertoire. The minimum repertoire requirements for enrollment are the equivalent of Suzuki Book 7. Enrollment in these classes is limited. Places will be assigned on a first come first served basis.
